Spicy Black Grams

This recipe is prepared on the eighth day of Navratri, “Ashtami” along with halwa and puris and is offered to little girls as Prasad. Boiled Black grams are tempered in ghee and spices and can be prepared with onion, ginger and tomatoes. Since this is a recipe for Prasad I have not used these ingredients.

Preparation time: 25-30 minutes

Ingredients:
  • 1 cup black gram/kala chana washed and soaked overnight
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 chopped green chilis
  • 8-10 fresh curry leaves
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • oil

Method:
  • In a pressure cooker, cook the soaked black grams with salt and water on medium heat for about 3-4 whistles. Drain and keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Add the chopped green chillis and curry leaves. Saute for 15-20 secs. 
  • Add the dry masalas, cooked black channa and stir for 2-3 minutes till all masalas blend with the black gram. 
  • Adjust the salt, remove from heat and serve.
