Samo rice/Vrat ke Chawal:

Preparation time: 20 minutes

  • ½ cup samo rice
  • 2 tsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds 
  • 1 tsp kala namak/rock salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper powder 
  • 1 big size potato, diced 
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 Black cardamom
  • Few roasted peanuts
  • 3-4 curry leaves
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing 


  • Heat up ghee; add cumin seeds, bay leaf, cloves, cardamoms and cinnamon. Stir till aroma arises and cumin splutters. 
  • Add in curry leaves,peanuts, potato and rice. Stir-fry till they look a bit fried. Mix in salt, pepper powder and 2 cups water, and bring to a boil. Lower the flame and simmer, covered, for about 15 minutes or till cooked through and the water is absorbed. Add more water if not cooked.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with a dollop of ghee.
